When magnesium-based spheroidizing agents are added to molten iron during casting, the graphite carbon precipitating during solidification transforms from flake-like to spherical. The spheroidized molten iron is then cast using high-speed centrifugal casting in water-cooled centrifuges (DN80–DN1200) or hot-mold centrifugal machines (DN1400–DN2600) to form pipes through high-speed centrifugal casting. These pipes are referred to as "ductile iron pipes" (Ductile Cast Iron Pipes), and are commonly abbreviated as ductile pipes, cast iron pipes, or ductile cast pipes.
In ductile iron, graphite exists in a spherical form, with a graphite size of 6–8 and a spheroidization grade of 1–3 (spheroidization rate >=80%). The material itself possesses good mechanical and ductile properties, combining the inherent characteristics of iron with the performance of steel. The internal and external anti-corrosion treatments and hydrostatic testing of ductile iron pipes ensure excellent corrosion resistance and sealing performance.
